CIRCLES OF GIVING HELP SUPPORT LOCAL RECOVERY EFFORTS AND A THRIVING FUTURE FOR VULNERABLE FAMILIES AND CHILDREN

United Way of Greater Portland’s Giving Circles are one impactful way directed community investment dollars are helping to make a difference for local families and their children. Those Giving Circles, Women United, and Brick & Beam Society, lead critical work that positively impacts vulnerable neighbors.

At their annual membership events this fall, both Women United and Brick & Beam Society announced impactful investments supporting two-generational work, literacy, and STEM/STEAM.

At their September 29 Advocacy Event, Women United announced $110,000 in community investments:

  • Project WIN: The Opportunity Alliance three-year targeted two-generational cohort supporting single mothers and their children.

At their October 21 Community Night, Brick & Beam Society announced $88,000 in community investments:

  • Avesta Housing: Westbrook Partnership Learning Assistance Initiative (Update: See video profile below, filmed in winter 2021) and
  • LearningWorks and SidexSide: STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Math) for Gifted Low Income, Minority, and English Language Learner Elementary Students.

These investments are in addition to immediate impact grants and one-time fundraisers throughout 2020.

Each Giving Circle is committed to targeted strategies and programmatic support that helps to give kids a great start, empowers neighbors to thrive – not just survive and helps all neighbors live longer better lives. Brick & Beam Society is committed to increasing literacy enrichment and Science, Technology, Arts, and Math (STEAM) opportunities for underserved children in Greater Portland. Women United is committed to the advancement of under-served single mothers and their children.

New challenges mean increased need, and both groups rely on membership and corporate support to fulfill their missions and programmatic goals.

Supporting these critical programs in the coming months and year ahead will be instrumental in our community’s ability to recover, rebuild, and thrive.
