United Way of Greater Portland Announces Downtown Window Display CAN-Struction Contest + Food Drive

Window displays will appear throughout downtown September 9 to 13 leading up to the CAN Sculpture Contest + Kickoff in Monument Square

United Way of Greater Portland’s Campaign Kickoff and United We CAN Sculpture Contest + Food Drive on September 13 in Monument Square just got more CAN-tastic with the addition of a window display contest September 9 to September 13 in downtown Portland.

Hoping to increase awareness about food insecurity in Greater Portland, and add an opportunity for more businesses to engage in the event, the contest invites those with street-front windows to build imaginative creations from canned food and non-food essentials for Wayside Food Programs.

This pre-event excitement will also give the public a taste of what’s to come September 13th when over 15 companies compete to win coveted prizes in Maine’s largest one-day food drive. With the addition of the window display contest, organizers are hoping to collect more food than ever for neighbors in need in Cumberland County.

How To Participate:

Business in downtown are invited to do a food drive, or collect canned food and essentials in the weeks leading up to the contest.
Using cans and other high needs items, participants are asked to create a fabulous can sculpture window display in their window that will be on display from September 9 to September 13.

An event poster with text to vote details (THIS IS A CONTEST, TOO!) will allow customers and passersby to vote for their favorite sculpture. The winner will be celebrated online and in our media alert that will go out the following week with our total food/ meal total raised. The winner will also receive an EPIC can-sculpture trophy to display in their business.

Documents:

There is no cost to participate. Canned goods will be picked up the Monday following the food drive.
