GENERAL SUMMARY:

The Senior Vice President, Community Impact is responsible for leading the strategic investment of United Way of Southern Maine’s (UWSM) financial and non-financial resources to create the greatest possible impact in helping improve outcomes for individuals and families and achieving community-level change. Essential to this work is developing and adopting community-wide goals and implementing a strategic and cohesive plan for impact to make progress on these goals, all based on an understanding of community needs, an awareness of community resources, a knowledge of local and national best practice strategies (financial, advocacy, volunteer, other), leveraging and aligning UWSM’s unique strengths and abilities to support the strategies, engaging in relationships and partnerships, assessing and responding to donors’ interest in elements of UWSM’s work, and measuring results. The Senior Vice President, Community Impact (SVP, CI) leads the 16-member Community Impact department and leads the organization as a member of the Senior Leadership Team.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

Identify and Implement Community-wide Goals in Youth Opportunity, Financial Security, Healthy Lives, and Community Resiliency.

  • Lead all aspects of identifying, adopting, and executing community-wide goals in Youth Opportunity, Financial Security, Healthy Lives, and Community Resiliency; this work will encompass stewarding implementation of Thrive2027’s two and a half final years while simultaneously identifying and developing the community goals work that will come after Thrive2027.
  • Coordinate implementation of all community impact strategies, including investments, collective impact, place-based work, volunteerism, and public policy and advocacy, to make progress on the adopted community-wide goals.
  • Ensure integration and alignment of goals, outcomes and strategies across Youth Opportunity, Financial Security, Health Lives, and Community Resiliency.
  • Maintain knowledge of best and promising UWW (and other) community impact model practices.
  • Provide supervision and direction to Community Impact leaders in developing and implementing goal areas (i.e., Youth Opportunity, Financial Security, Healthy Lives, and Community Resiliency) impact plans.
  • Direct development and implementation of needs assessment model.
  • Lead UWSM CI priority setting process.
  • Direct development and implementation of an evaluation strategy that supports UWSM’s community impact work.
  • Support data-driven and continuous learning processes with community impact staff.
  • Create and manage strategic partnerships with community stakeholders.
  • Provide staff support to the Community Impact Steering Committee of the Board of Directors, and other appropriate high-level community impact committees, such as the Thrive2027 Council.
  • Identify annual budgets for community impact department.
  • Ensure department operates within adopted budget.

Support UWSM Strategic Direction and Management

  • Provide counsel and support to President & CEO.
  • Work collaboratively with senior leadership team members to ensure organizational success.
  • With President & CEO and other senior team members, implement, monitor and report on UWSM strategies.

Other

  • Represent United Way in community meetings, boards, coalitions, and forums.
  • Set direction and be accountable for the divisional goals in support of the strategic plan.
  • Engage in resource development duties as assigned.
  • Provide superior service that exceeds the expectations of both internal and external customers.
  • Volunteer and actively participate in projects, special events, cross-functional teams, or workgroups that support the entire organization’s work.
  • Other activities and duties as assigned.

PREFERRED SKILLS & EXPERIENCE:

Skills:

  • Strong staff leadership skills
  • Well-developed technical and analytical skills related to human services planning and evaluation
  • Excellent English written and oral communication, including public presentation skills
  • Strong understanding of research and statistics and the ability to clearly present data and results in written, electronic and oral forms
  • Ability to analyze problems, develop and implement creative solutions
  • Technical aptitude and comfort with Microsoft Office suite including Excel and PowerPoint
  • Proven track record of teaming with staff, volunteers and a diverse group of stakeholders
  • Ability to plan and manage multiple tasks with strong attention to detail
  • Ability to recruit, motivate and direct volunteers in a team environment
  • Skill in exercising a high degree of initiative, flexibility, judgment, discretion, and decision-making
  • Proven track record of innovation

Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree or foreign equivalent and ten years of related experience in volunteer management, social work, legal, public policy, and/or human services fields, or equivalent education and experience with progressively increasing responsibility. Advanced degree in one of the above fields preferred.
  • Experience in organizational and community development principles and practices, outcome measurement processes, and collaboration principles.
  • At least 3 years of direct staff leadership experience, including managing a department or functional area and fostering effective working relationships across multiple functional areas
  • Experience with the application of outcome measurement/program evaluation and human services planning
  • Experience working with and supporting high profile, influential community volunteers
  • Experience working with and supporting collaborations

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITY:

Senior Director, Youth Opportunity; Senior Director, Financial Security; Senior Director, Community Engagement; Senior Director, Community Impact Operations; Director, Healthy Communities; and their teams

WORK ENVIRONMENT:

This job operates in a professional office environment. This role routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, photocopiers, filing cabinets and fax machines.

A valid driver’s license, verifiable auto insurance, and use of a personal vehicle is required.

We are focused on creating connections within the Southern Maine community. Our current hybrid model is focused on doing just that. This position requires at least 32 hours per week creating connections. Examples of creating connections include office time, external meetings/gatherings, training, volunteer engagement events, and even a cup of coffee with an internal/external partner. Early morning (7:30 AM) and evening (5-7 PM) meetings or events will occur regularly. During some periods of the year, hours beyond 40 per week may be necessary.

The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is occasionally required to stand; walk; sit; use hands to finger, handle, or feel objects, tools or controls; reach with hands and arms; balance; stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl; talk or hear; The employee may occasionally lift or move up to 25 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by the job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and the ability to adjust focus.

POSITION TYPE/EXPECTED HOURS OF WORK:

This is a full-time position. Days and hours of work are Monday through Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. This position regularly requires long hours and weekend work.

TRAVEL:

Travel is primarily local during the business day, although some out-of-area and overnight travel may be expected.
