CA$H Greater Portland

Free, Flexible, Safe Tax Preparation

CA$H Greater Portland, a program of United Way of Southern Maine, has been helping individuals and families achieve financial security for years through free tax preparation, financial education, and year-round outreach. Last year, we assisted over 850 clients, securing $1.4 million in refunds and saving $205,000 in tax preparation fees.

Get Your Taxes Prepared for Free This Season

CA$H Greater Portland offers four convenient, free options for filing your taxes during the 2026 tax season. All options will be available from January to April 2026. Starting January 21, households that earned $69,000 or less may qualify for free tax preparation services.

We welcome all Mainers to file their taxes with us! We have volunteer tax preparers and interpreters fluent in Spanish, French, Portuguese, Lingala, Arabic, Turkish, Russian, Azerbaijani, Vietnamese, Kinyarwanda, Kirundi, Kinyamurenge, and Swahili, and a helpline available in numerous languages, so every Mainer feels supported and connected.

  • Option 3, Scan & Go: No device? No problem! You can find Scan & Go locations at cPort Credit Unions in Portland (Middle St., Forest Ave, and Riverside locations) and Scarborough (Route 1).
  • Option 4, Fully Virtual Service: Start the process online by visiting
getyourrefund.org/gpmaine—answer questions, upload documents, and e-sign before we e-file your return.

Preparing for your appointment:

Please arrive at our office 30 minutes before your appointment time. Please arrive with all required identification and tax documents for each person on your return. All adults you are filing for need to come to our office as well, but children under 18 years old are not required to come to our office.

REQUIRED FOR YOUR APPOINTMENT: Please be sure to bring the following documents to your appointment (we cannot do your taxes without these documents):

  • Government-Issued Photo Identification Card (such as a Driver’s License, Passport)
  • Social Security Card for yourself (and spouse if Married Filing Jointly)
  • If you are Married Filing Jointly, your spouse must join you for the tax appointment in-person. They must bring all of the relevant documents listed below.
  • Social security card for anyone else on the return, including any child(ren) you are claiming as dependent(s)
  • All income documents that you have, for example:
    ♦  Wage and earning statement(s) from all employers, (Form W-2, W-2G, 1099-R, 1099-Misc, 1099-K)
♦  Interest and dividend statements from banks (Forms 1099-INT, 1099-DIV)
♦  Self-employed filers must bring records of their business income. This includes Uber, Lyft, and DoorDash drivers.
  • You may be eligible for a State Credit for your rent or property tax:
  • Last year’s taxes if you have them (helpful but not required).
  • For direct deposit, you need to bring in a blank check or a bank card with your direct deposit information for checking or savings. The IRS will not be issuing paper checks this year, so you must do direct deposit.

If you have scheduled an appointment to file taxes for multiple tax years (such as 2024, 2023, 2022) please bring all of the documents listed above for all of those years. We appreciate you coming prepared, and we’re excited to prepare your return and talk to you about helpful resources in our community!

Inclement weather or safety may cause your appointment to be canceled. We will contact you about last-minute changes due to weather by email and/or text message.

In case you need to cancel your appointment, please get in touch with us: (207) 347-2335.
