Every month we share a Volunteer Engagement Newsletter with opportunities to engage throughout Greater Portland. Here are some of the highlights from July’s Newsletter.
SUPPORT STUDENTS ENTERING KINDERGARTEN
Volunteer with Kindergarten Jumpstart and assist classroom teachers in Westbrook with overall classroom support, including helping with the morning routine and assisting students with literacy activities. Kindergarten Jumpstart helps prepare kids to enter Kindergarten in the fall. The program provides literacy-based, hands-on learning activities and gives children the opportunity to learn basic daily school routines. Commitment is once a week (Mon – Fri) from July 1 – July 25, 9 -11:00 a.m. Volunteers should be comfortable with small children, flexible and able to adapt to a changing classroom environment. BOYS AND GIRLS CLUB – BRAIN GAIN: READ!
Brain Gain: Read! is a Monday-Thursday reading, STEM, and social -emotional skill-building program for children grades K-3. Fridays are field trips that tie into the weekly theme. The program runs from June 24-August 16. The program is designed to stop the summer slide in learning. The program is offered at all Boys & Girls Clubhouses (Portland, Riverton Park, Sagamore Village and South Portland). Hours vary. FMI email volunteer@unitedwaygp.org.
CATHOLIC CHARITIES MAINE – REFUGEE AND IMMIGRATION SERVICES
Catholic Charities Maine offers mentor programs for newly arrived refugees. Work with a family, adults, or children new to the country. FMI visit

2019 6 WHO CARE AWARDS
Recognize a dedicated and inspiring adult volunteer in our community by nominating them for 6 Who Care, an annual recognition opportunity made possible by NEWS CENTER Maine, TD Bank, Dead River Company, and UWGP. BRICK & BEAM SOCIETY FUNDING AVAILABLE

Brick & Beam seeks proposals that target early childhood learning and/or STEM programming and supporting high-need populations, birth through 8th grade. Brick & Beam supports projects that are high-impact, sustainable, and replicable and approaches that are innovative, holistic, and collaborative.
