FACILITATE OR TAKE NOTES FOR EDUCATION FOCUS GROUPS

Two years after initial Community Conversations that resulted in Thrive2027, United Way of Greater Portland is interested in convening focus groups to gather more information from the community about our shared educational goals. Three different focus groups will be convened from participating school districts: middle & high school staff, elementary school staff, and high school students. We are seeking community volunteers to help facilitate and take notes at these focus groups. Volunteers must attend a training in September and commit to two, 90-minute focus group sessions (most likely from 2:30-5pm). Scheduling is flexible within the chosen dates. Click here to learn more and contact volunteer@unitedwaygp.org. to sign up.

SIGN UP FOR STARTING STRONG READING PARTNERS

Starting Strong is looking for volunteers interested in helping Portland first graders with their reading. For 12 weeks, a volunteer meets up with a student to read a book and go through short activities for thirty minutes. The volunteer builds a relationship with the student and provides one-to-one time to improve their reading. There are opportunities to volunteer with a student at Hall, Reiche, Riverton, Lyseth, or Ocean Avenue Elementary. If interested in signing up for the session beginning in September, contact volunteer@unitedwaygp.org to start the application process.

EXPLORE THE MOON WITH THE BOYS AND GIRLS CLUBS OF SOUTHERN MAINE

Mentors are needed to support Exploration Station, a Boys and Girls Club STEM program for Boys & Girls Club members grades 1-4. Members will be paired with one to two mentors to explore this year’s science theme, Mission Moon. Volunteers meet for one hour each week for 12 weeks beginning in October. The final session is the Expo and lasts for two hours. Patience and enthusiasm are the only requirements. No previous technology or teaching experience is needed. Opportunities are available at the Portland, South Portland and Riverton Park Clubhouses. Email volunteer@unitedwaygp.org for more information.

GREET CLIENTS DURING MEDICARE OPEN ENROLLMENT AT SMAAA

The Southern Maine Agency on Aging seeks a Tuesday afternoon receptionist for the upcoming Medicare Open Enrollment Period. Tasks include greeting clients who are arriving for their one-on-one appointments, guiding them to their appointment, and handing them information as they leave the building. Hours are 1-4:30pm, Tuesday October 16-Tuesday, December 4. There will be a training session prior to October 16. Please contact volunteer@smaaa.org or call (207) 396-6595 for more information.
