HELP CAMP KETCHA PREPARE FOR SUMMER CAMPS
Camp Ketcha has hosted several volunteer days in the past weeks as they get their 107- acre campus prepared for a busy summer camp season. Many local businesses and community organizations have already lent a hand, including WEX, Sappi, MEMIC, Sun Life Financial, Biddeford Savings Bank, Maine Medical Center, Anthem, Texas Instruments, and UPS, and a few extra volunteers are always welcome. ASSIST WITH PORTLAND PUBLIC LIBRARY’S BOOK SALE
The Portland Public Library is looking for volunteers to help with this year’s book sale at their Annex located at 1000 Riverside Street in Portland. Volunteers are needed to assist with set-up from 2-5pm and as cashiers and floaters from 5-8pm on Friday, June 8. On Saturday, June 9, volunteers can serve as cashiers, floaters, and clean-up crew from 9am-3pm. To sign up, click here.
SERVE SUMMER MEALS TO PORTLAND YOUTH
Those who like spending time with kids and want to be more involved in the community should consider volunteering for Portland’s Summer Meal Sites this summer. Summer Meals is a national USDA program that provides kids with free, nutritious meals while school is out of session. Volunteers are expected to commit to one consistent, weekly, ninety minute shift for the entire duration of the program. Volunteers are also required to attend a food service/summer meals training prior to the start of the program. SERVE SUMMER MEALS TO WESTBROOK YOUTH
Volunteer to serve lunch at Walker Field in Westbrook, from July 30-August 17, 11:45am-12:45pm daily. An activity calendar has not yet been developed, but the site is also hoping to offer activities each day. Ideally, one volunteer will serve meals and a second volunteer (or two) will do an activity with participants. Volunteer groups can opt to volunteer for a full week or two, or they may want to select specific days of the week for the duration (e.g. every Monday for the four-week period). There is a mandatory volunteer training scheduled for Friday, June 22 from 2-3pm in the Media Center of Westbrook Community Center. For more information, email volunteer@unitedwaygp.org.
VOLUNTEER WITH MAINE AUDUBON THIS SUMMER
Maine Audubon is looking for volunteers ages 14 and older to help with a variety of tasks at the Scarborough Marsh Nature Center. All experience levels are welcome. This is a perfect opportunity for students looking to enhance their college application, earn community service hours, or add experiences with nature and science to their resumes. Specific opportunities include participating in Citizen Science Projects, such as bird monitoring in July and August and inventorying all insects and plans in the marsh during a Biodiversity Day in July, assisting Nature Store visitors (greeting people, organizing merchandise, answering phone calls), managing canoe rentals, leading nature walks, and carrying out various landscaping projects.
