HELP LYSETH ELEMENTARY SCHOOLERS GET A STRONG START WITH READING

Lyseth Elementary School, located at 175 Auburn Street in Portland, is looking for volunteers to join their Starting Strong Reading Program. The mission of the program is to have all third graders reading at third grade level so that when they enter fourth grade, they are reading to learn, not still learning to read. The school identifies young students in first grade who need a little extra help and then pairs them up twice a week with volunteers who read with them and encourage them to enjoy literacy. The commitment is once or twice a week, Monday through Friday, from 12:30-1:15pm. Training is provided for new volunteers and the students come to their volunteers with a book bag including selections from their teacher. All the volunteers need to bring is a smile and lots of patience. To learn more, contact Sylvie Montello at montes@portlandschools.org.
