Family Volunteer Day is a National Day of Service held on the Saturday before Thanksgiving. This year we have projects in both Portland and Westbrook.

When: Saturday, November 19
Who: Volunteers of all ages and abilities are welcome. Young children must be accompanied by adults.
Where: United Way of Greater Portland, One Canal Plaza, 3rd floor in Portland (from 9:30-11am) and Westbrook Community Center, 426 Bridge Street in Westbrook (from 1-2:30pm)
Projects: In Portland, volunteers will create centerpieces for Wayside Food Programs’ Annual Community Thanksgiving. In Westbrook, volunteers will create dual language picture books for English Language Learners. Volunteers can also take part in an artistic project for Meals on Wheels recipients at both locations.
RSVP: Email kkeller@unitedwaygp.org so we can ensure ample supplies and treats.

SCHOOL LIBRARY ORGANIZATION PROJECT

Presumpscot Elementary School is in need of a group of 4-6 volunteers to help their librarian update and better organize their book collection. It’s a big project for a small school and extra hands dedicated to this project will make all the difference. Volunteers will provide support alongside the librarian, shelve books in appropriate locations, and add spine labels and barcodes to the library collection. The project would take place during the school day and could take a dedicated group up to six hours or as long as the group can give. The school is flexible with the day but hopes to accomplish the project soon. FMI, contact Phyllis Hey, Community Coordinator, heyp@portlandschools.org or (207) 874-8220.

KINDERGARTEN BLAST OFF

Kindergarten Blast Off, a program of Saccarappa Elementary School in Westbrook, helps provide additional literacy support to children. Volunteers and staff will assist students with literacy-based, hands-on learning activities one-on-one or in small groups and help them practice basic daily school routines. Volunteers are asked to commit to one or more days each week between November 1 – January 13, from 9:15-11am and will need to complete an application, agree to a background check, and attend a short training. FMI, contact Karen Stephenson at kstephenson@unitedwaygp.org.

HELP CREATE ASSETS, SAVINGS, AND HOPE WITH CA$H GREATER PORTLAND

No experience necessary. Free training and IRS certification will be provided. Contact Ali AL Dhamen at ali.aldhamen@goodwillnne.org or (207) 699-0753 FMI.
