WELCOME MULTILINGUAL FAMILIES AT A BACK TO SCHOOL EVENT
The Multilingual & Multicultural Center of Portland Public Schools will host its annual Back to School event Saturday, September 17 from 1-4pm at the East End Community Center in Portland. This event welcomes new multilingual families to Portland and shows them that they are supported in the schools and in their community. The Center seeks volunteers on event day to help with set-up, check in the multilingual families, help run children’s activities, and assist with clean-up. HELP OUT AT HANDS AROUND THE COVE
Help with set up, registration, clean up, and general organization during Hands Around the Cove, a family-friendly community-building event on Sunday, September 18 at 11am. The Greater Portland Board of REALTORS is hosting this fun event in an effort to bring together 3,500+ people with a goal of encircling Back Cove (3.5 miles). All are welcome to enjoy music and food from local food trucks in Payson Park after the event. FMI or to volunteer, please email hatcvolunteer@gmail.com.
BE A FRIENDLY VISITOR FOR THE COMMUNITY SUPPORT PROGRAM
The Community Support Program – a pilot program at the Southern Maine Agency on Aging designed to provide support and assistance to people with a memory concern who live alone and do not have regular support from a caregiver – seeks volunteers to act as Friendly Visitors. The CSP Friendly Visitors play an important role in provid¬ing companionship and support to help reduce isolation and serve as a link from the home to the CSP professional staff. Interested individuals should have knowledge of dementia or a willingness to learn, a sensitivity to the needs of someone facing difficult life circumstances, and the ability to listen attentively and initiate conversation. Volunteers will visit in the client’s home and/or go on outings in the client’s community for approximately 1-2 hours per week for a minimum period of 6 months. MENTOR A HIGH SCHOOL STUDENT THIS SCHOOL YEAR
The Portland Mentoring Alliance is recruiting volunteers to serve as one-on-one mentors to high school students for the 2016-17 school year. Many students who request a mentor are immigrants or refugees and especially benefit from having a native born English-speaking adult assist them during this important time in their lives. The commitment is a minimum of one hour a week during the school year. The program focuses on academic success, post-secondary planning, and socialization.
