UNITED WAY NEWSLETTER
MAY 2026
United Way of Southern Maine’s 2025-26 Community Report is here, and I’m incredibly proud to share what you made possible over the past year.
Because of you:
- Aspiring child care educators obtained the essential training they need to succeed,
- Low-income neighbors received free tax preparation, putting more money back in their pockets,
- Employers came together to develop real solutions for supporting ALICE (Asset Limited, Income Constrained, Employed) workers, and
- Incarcerated moms stayed connected with their kids through reading, which helped reduce trauma.
And this is just a brief snapshot.
Together, we are building a thriving Southern Maine – where families can access healthcare and nutritious food; live in safe, stable housing; and find affordable child care and high-quality learning opportunities for their children. I hope you will read the report because every story and result reflects your impact. Together, we can keep moving this vision forward. United is the way to a thriving Southern Maine.
As always, please feel free to let me know what you think, share any ideas you might have, or ask any questions you have about United Way.
With deep gratitude,
Dan Coyne

Erika’s Story: Opening Doors for Educators
“[My job] delights me every day I go to work. For me, it is magnificent when we take care of children.” Before Erika found her dream job in child care, she was living in a hotel with her children. She joined a United Way program for future early child care educators that provided essential training, transportation, and translation services, removing barriers that often prevent talented educators from moving forward.

May is Mental Health Awareness Month
When we care for our mental health and work together to reduce stigma, our entire community benefits. United Way strengthens access to health care by investing in mental health support, substance use prevention and treatment, and 211 Maine, which connects callers with ongoing support and resources. Nina Misra, director of healthy communities, recently joined WMPG’s Blunt Youth Radio Project to discuss how 211 Maine can be a resource for teens navigating mental health challenges.
Our staff also took time to care for our own mental health with Wellness Week, emphasizing the importance of both physical and mental health. We took time to slow down and reconnect through activities like art making, a pet meet-and-greet, walks, and conversation. Join us by taking time to do a favorite activity or trying out a healthy new habit this month.

A Home Run for Southern Maine
There’s another reason to cheer for the Portland Sea Dogs this season. Thanks to Lighthouse Credit Union, every home run and home victory will light up the Portland Sea Dogs’ lighthouse and support our community. For each celebration, Lighthouse Credit Union will donate to United Way of Southern Maine, up to $10,000 during the 2026 season. We’re incredibly grateful for this support and impactful partnership!
Portland 10 Miler Raises $10,000 for United Way
For the third year, United Way of Southern Maine was proud to partner with the Portland 10 Miler! We received a portion of all proceeds, and seven incredible runners volunteered to raise funds through the race, resulting in a total of $10,000 for our community.
