March is Women’s History Month, a time to reflect on the incredible contributions women have made, and continue to make, to Southern Maine’s culture, history, and society.
We also recognize women face unique challenges, especially when they are ALICE (Asset Limited, Income Constrained, Employed). In Southern Maine, 68% of single women with children live below the ALICE threshold (the minimum income level necessary for a household’s survival). Despite a stable income, they still cannot afford basic needs like housing, child care, food, transportation, health care, and technology. Consequently, they cannot save money or build assets, which leaves them one emergency away from a financial crisis. In comparison, 49% of single men with children live below the ALICE threshold.
However, women also uplift each other. Women United, a United Way of Southern Maine giving circle, is dedicated to inspiring and engaging women as positive change agents to support the advancement of single mothers and their children in Southern Maine. Members have invested an incredible $1.2M into programs that provide comprehensive support and move single women and their families toward financial stability.
Lidia's Story: A Path to Homeownership and Financial Stability
Lidia worked hard to support her family as a single mother. She lived with her children in a small Portland apartment and dreamed of having the space for her kids to play freely.
When she joined Project WIN, a program supported by Women United and operated by The Opportunity Alliance, she was connected with other moms, local resources, and one-on-one coaching. The program opened her eyes to the possibility of homeownership. Lidia worked hard to achieve her goals and now owns a home and runs her own catering business.
WOmen United takes over the children's museum and theater of maine
Women United members, supporters, and their families recently gathered at the Children’s Museum & Theater of Maine to explore the museum after hours, craft 2D homes in the Makerspace, and connect with new and old friends.
Women United offers regular opportunities for connecting and networking with other like-minded community members. See all membership benefits at womenunitedsm.org.
