HELP OUT AT THE PEAKS TO PORTLAND SWIM TO BENEFIT KIDS
Volunteers are needed to help with the Peaks to Portland Swim to Benefit Kids on Saturday, July 28. All proceeds benefit the children in the YMCA of Southern Maine’s Youth Development programs. Volunteer roles are available on Peaks Island or Portland’s East End Beach, and all will receive refreshments and a t-shirt. For more information or to sign up, click here.
CONDUCT CHECK-IN CALLS WITH CLIENTS
Catholic Charities Maine seeks a Communications and Administration Assistant volunteer in Portland at their Independent Support Services office, which serves seniors, and individuals with disabilities. The prospective volunteer should enjoy phone work and can contact their clients on a monthly basis to check in with them. Hours are flexible, on an ongoing basis during the work week. HELP ENSURE “BRAIN GAIN” AT A BOYS & GIRLS CLUBHOUSE THIS SUMMER
The Boys and Girls Clubs of Southern Maine seek volunteer support for their Summer Learning Loss Prevention Program, Brain Gain. This program runs Monday-Thursday from 12:30-2pm at the Sagamore Village and Riverton Park Clubhouses in Portland and from 8-10:30am at the South Portland Clubhouse. Ideal volunteers have an education or instructional background and experience with children ages six to nine years old and behavior management. TUTOR ADULTS LEARNING ENGLISH
Have some extra time this summer? Becoming an English language tutor is a chance to make a lasting impact in the life of an adult immigrant or refugee in your community. In this one-to-one tutoring program through LearningWorks, highly motivated adult learners from Somalia, Sudan, Iraq, Congo, Angola, El Salvador, and other countries are
matched with tutors for a six-month period. During this time, the tutor will meet for a total of two to three hours a week with the student to help him or her with personal English language learning goals. An intensive 10-part training webinar will be provided, as well as initial planning meetings and regular check-ins with the Program Coordinator. Prior experience teaching, tutoring, or working with adult/multilingual communities is beneficial but by no means necessary.
