EVENT UPDATE: A CONVERSATION WITH ELAINE ROSEN

Tocqueville and Brick & Beam Event Update: A Conversation with Elaine Rosen

On May 23rd, members of United Way of Greater Portland’s Tocqueville Society and Brick and Beam Society gathered at the Maine Historical Society. Elaine Rosen (Chair of the Board of Assurant, Inc., Chair of the Board of The Kresge Foundation, former President of Unum, and former United Way of Greater Portland Campaign Chair) shared powerful words on the importance of philanthropy, mentorship, and developing community leaders.

Elaine said about mentorship: “Good mentorships are good partnerships. At their best, they are steeped in respect and trust. The culmination of such partnerships is when the mentee becomes a mentor for another, and on and on it goes.”

Larry Wold (Maine State President for TD Bank and one of UWGP’s Tocqueville Society Chairs), Michael Simonds (President of Unum and UWGP’s Board Chair), Emily Hopkins (Consumer Analyst at Unum and Chair of the Brick & Beam Society), and Liz Cotter Schlax (President and CEO of UWGP) all spoke to the importance of building our community, cultivating a culture of philanthropy, and working together to help Greater Portland thrive.

“Bringing members of both the Tocqueville Society and the Brick & Beam Society together is a way for us to ensure that our community continues to grow and thrive from a leadership and philanthropic perspective.” – Mike Simonds
