PLANT TREES AT MOUNT JOY ORCHARD’S SPRING FESTIVAL
The Locker Project seeks volunteers to help at a Spring Festival on Sunday, May 7 at Mount Joy Orchard, a free-to-pick public orchard in Portland. At the festival, volunteers plant trees and sheet mulch and have access to several free workshops throughout the day. As a partner, The Locker Project will be the recipient of excess fruits and nuts from the trees at harvest. Volunteers should meet at the bottom of the hill close to Washington Ave. Volunteers should wear work clothes and bring water, gloves, and garden tools (shovels, grade rakes, and wheel barrows) if possible. Shifts are flexible but may run from 10am-12pm, 12pm-2pm or 2-4pm. FMI, contact Steve Phillips, volunteer@mainelockerproject.org.
VOLUNTEER AT THE I MADE IT HAPPEN! GRADUATION CELEBRATION
The Multilingual & Multicultural Center at Portland Public Schools (MLMC) seeks volunteers to assist from 5:15-6:30pm and 8-9pm at their annual I Made It Happen! graduation celebration event on Wednesday, May 17 at the University of Southern Maine’s Hannaford Hall. Volunteers will set up and designate seating, help greet guests, manage a check-in table, distribute headphones to families in need of interpretation, and pack up the event at the end of the night. Apply online here or contact Kendi Dykema, dykemk@portlandschools.org for more information.
HELP MANAGE CORNELIA’S CLOSET
Cornelia’s Closet Thrift Store at the Westbrook Community Center (WCC) is bigger, brighter, and better than ever! The store is full of clothing and decorative home goods and proceeds go toward the WCC’s various programs. Volunteers are needed on Wednesdays for shifts between 9am-1pm and will be trained to greet and treat customers with respect and a smile. Volunteers sort donations, work the cash register, keep the store clean and organized, and create displays. There is always a member of the management team in the building to contact by radio for questions and help. To learn more about this great opportunity, contact Deb Malley, dmalley@westbrook.me.us.
LEAD SEASONAL WALKING TOURS IN FREEPORT
Volunteers conduct guided tours of Freeport neighborhoods for the public. By generating dialogue and inquiry, volunteers encourage visitors to discover the historical importance, architecture, people, and history of Freeport. Tours will take place on weekdays and Saturdays and will last approximately 45-60 minutes. Volunteers will complete an Introductory Training Course, study selected readings, and accompany experienced volunteers and Freeport Historical Society staff on guided tours to gain knowledge and skills in leading groups. After training, volunteers are expected to conduct 2-4 tours per month from June through October. Interviews will be conducted in May and training will begin in June. Volunteers should enjoy interacting with the public and communicating effectively with individuals, families, and school groups, be able to work with a team, be dependable and flexible, and willing to learn new information and solve problems. For more information, please contact Jennifer Pollick, info@freeporthistoricalsociety.org.
