Virtual Bus Tour

WELCOME ABOARD

Hop aboard our virtual bus tour and visit three of the 60+ local organizations supported by your donation to United Way. Watch the whole tour below (4 minutes).

COVID-19 Can’t Derail Greater Portland!

There are many things about our world right now that are different. The way we work, learn, and live. And while we have all weathered the same storm, we are not all in the same boat. COVID-19 has amplified challenges for our most vulnerable neighbors – food insecurity, housing instability, financial duress, health challenges, and more. Fortunately, our funded community partners responded and came up with alternative ways to continue providing services and supports during the immediate crisis. We too have had to come up with alternative, safe solutions to show your dollars at work.

So, jump on board our Virtual Bus Tour with superstar volunteer driver Rodney Mondor! We will visit three funded partner program sites. At each stop, we get a brief view of the work made possible thanks to your generous contributions. With your support, these organizations, and more than 40 more across Greater Portland, give kids get a strong start, empower our neighbors to thrive – not just survive, and help us all to live longer better lives.

Sit back, relax, and enjoy the ride!

First Stop: Locker Project

SUPPORTS Thrive2027 GOAL ONE: GIVE OUR KIDS A STRONG START

At this stop, we visit with Locker Project Executive Director, Kathryn Sargent, who shares more about the organization and how they continue to provide nourishing food to Greater Portland school students and their families amid the pandemic.

To give kids a strong start, Locker Project provides class-time snacks and healthy foods to help fuel learning during homework or out-of-school time like weekends and school breaks. Locker Project takes a whole-family approach to child hunger, offering programs that strive to be a low barrier, stigma-free, and environmentally responsible. With schools in Portland, South Portland, and Westbrook closed, Locker Project worked with their partners to continue to distribute healthy food available as safely and effectively as possible.

Next Stop: Portland Housing

SUPPORTS Thrive2027 GOAL TWO: EMPOWER NEIGHBORS TO THRIVE – NOT JUST SURVIVE

At this stop, we will visit Joni Boissonneault, Self Sufficiency Program Manager with Portland Housing Authority (PHA), who shares more about PHA and the emPOWERme program, a holistic approach to family stabilization and financial empowerment.

Working with community partners, Portland Housing Authority provides and expands affordable housing and services that improve quality of life, build community, enhance safety, and promote personal success. The emPOWERme program works with PHA residents to help them achieve their financial goals – from meeting basic needs to saving money to finding a job or buying a house.

Next Stop: Spurwink

SUPORTS Thrive2027GOAL THREE: HELP US ALL LIVE LONGER, HEALTHIER LIVES

At this stop, we visit with Amy Cohan, LCSW, Vice President of Outpatient and Community Services with Spurwink, who shares how United Way funding supports programs that help people longer, better lives by assisting adults with serious and persistent illness and those experiencing homelessness.

Spurwink provides behavioral health and education services for children, adults, and families. Throughout the coronavirus pandemic, Spurwink has worked closely with partners to provide essential behavioral health services in the safest ways possible using tools like telehealth to successfully manage their client base. Spurwink’s goal is to help ensure individuals and families served live healthy, engaged lives in their communities.
