VOLUNTEER TOP PICKS OF THE MONTH

Looking for a way to meet new people while positively impacting the community you live, grow, and work in? Check out the June top volunteer picks and get started today.

SUPERVISE ACTIVITIES AT EAST END COMMUNITY SCHOOL’S FIELD DAY

East End Community School, a Pre-K through 5th grade elementary school at 195 North Street in Portland, will hold its Family Picnic/Field Day on Friday, June 9 from 11am-1pm. The field day includes many outdoor activities that will require adult management and supervision, such as 3-legged races, sack races, face painting, long jump, etc. Volunteers will fill out a volunteer application and go through the standard background check required of all Portland Public School volunteers. If interested, please contact Naila Wissa at wissan@portlandschools.org.

HELP PLAN A SPECIAL EVENT FOR A COMPANY OF GIRLS

Do you love throwing parties and events and want to support a great cause? A Company of Girls (ACOG) seeks volunteers to serve on their Special Events Committee that will produce a fundraiser event this fall to support their 2017-18 programming. Volunteers will help plan and coordinate the event, attain auction items and food donations, solicit sponsorships, encourage guests to attend, decorate the venue, and assist with general event tasks. The event is currently planned for mid-Fall. ACOG anticipates that the committee will hold at least one meeting a month in June, July, August, and September with more frequent meet ups in October as the event gets closer. Committee members are asked to attend meetings, volunteer for tasks (and follow up on those tasks), attend the event and invite others to attend, and assist ACOG in providing a great time for guests as well as raising necessary funds and promoting ACOG’s mission throughout the community. If interested, please email jen@acompanyofgirls.org.

JOIN PORTLAND HOUSING AUTHORITY’S SUMMER PROGRAMMING TEAM!

Portland Housing Authority’s summer programming is designed to keep youth engaged in growth, learning, and exploration on weekday afternoons through the summer months. Volunteers are essential to this effort, helping to engage more children by assisting youth one-on-one or in small groups on a variety of projects, including arts and crafts, theater, gardening, and active play. Come join the team! Donating as little as two hours a week can help ensure that every child can get the support they need to have fun and be successful! For more information, email Azia Gilbert at vista.youth@porthouse.org.

SUPPORT IMMIGRANT/REFUGEE CHILDREN

For 20 years, the Center for Grieving Children’s Intercultural Peer Support Program has collaborated with local schools and others to serve parents, children, and teens who have resettled in Portland from countries that experienced war, conflict, and natural disaster. The Intercultural Peer Support Program promotes healing from collective loss and encouraging resilience by increasing children’s coping skills, building positive peer relationships and supporting the acquisition of English language skills. Volunteers need to be able to commit to 4 hours a week (on a Monday, Wednesday, or Friday afternoon) between October and May. The Center welcomes all interested volunteers and is particularly interested in volunteers who reflect the diversity of the children this program serves. Please contact Beth Quinlan at beth@cgcmaine.org or (207) 775-5216 with questions or to sign up for a one hour volunteer orientation. More details are also available here.
