FINANCIAL LITERACY READING OPPORTUNITY
On Thursday, April 25 Volunteers will celebrate National Financial Literacy Month at Canal from 2 pm – 3 pm and at Saccarappa Elementary School from 9 am – 10 am in Westbrook. Volunteers will read a book to first graders and lead the class in a related activity. FMI email volunteer@unitedwaygp.org.
SERVE AS A SCHOLARSHIP MENTOR
A Scholarship Mentor will take a ProsperityME PROSPER Scholarship student under their wing. The goal is help students adjust to college life in America and to prepare for a career in their field of study. Mentors will be matched with compatible students majoring in the mentor’s professional field. The mentor will act as a “big brother or sister” figure, friend, and guide. Mentors may help students select courses, provide general advice, and help students develop a resume and professional network that will position the student to be hired by a Maine employer upon graduation. ASSIST HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS WITH JOB SEARCH SKILLS
Portland Arts & Technology High School (PATHS) is coordinating a Career Fair Monday, April 8 and Wednesday, April 10, to prepare students with job search skills. Volunteers will help lead a class on resume writing, assist with one-on-one writing and support, as well as conduct mock interviews (questions provided). A career fair will be held for students at the end of the month. PATHS is also seeking to partner/feature local businesses looking to hire, such as military programs, and community colleges with certificate programs and apprenticeships. VOLUNTEER MILITARY ENTRANCE PROCESSING (MEPS) STATION FOR AMERICAN RED CROSS
Volunteer as a MEPS Red Cross Site Volunteer. Your role will be to support recruits and their families while they are processing at the Military Entrance Processing Station (MEPS) in downtown Portland. Volunteers will liaise with the MEPS staff to determine the best means for the Red Cross to connect with the recruits and families, provide Red Cross preparedness information to the recruits and their families and engage with the recruits to fill out family contact cards and ensure cards are processed. Training entails: An American Red Cross Orientation, an introduction to Service to the Armed Forces (SAF), Military 101 and an Introduction to SAF Casework. This role is ideal for those that have a personal experience with the military as a service member or family member, though this is not required.
